This can suddenly become an issue after an accident or in the event of a serious illness. With a living will, you specify in advance which medical treatments you refuse—so that your wishes are respected, even if you’re unable to express them at the time.

⚖️ In Austria, there are two types: ✅ A legally binding advance healthcare directive: This requires a medical consultation and must be drawn up before a notary, attorney, patient advocate, or adult protection association. It is valid for a maximum of eight years and must then be renewed. ✅ The remarkable advance healthcare directive: It is informal and serves as an important guide for doctors and family members.
